Rank tracking software: keyword rank tracking software with daily Google positions

The short answer

Rank tracking software records where your pages sit in search results for a list of keywords, on a schedule, and keeps the dated history. Serpstracker checks every keyword once every 24 hours from a pinned, unpersonalized US context on Google and Bing, stores the ranking URL and the competitors around you, and emails or Slacks you the day a position crosses a threshold you set. Plans run $39 for 250 keywords, $99 for 1,500, and $249 for 5,000 with white-label reports and API access.

What rank tracking software does

Five jobs, and every one of them needs stored history.

A rank checker answers one question once. Rank tracking software answers the same question every day and remembers the answer, which is the whole difference. Everything below depends on having yesterday's number to compare against.

01

Scheduled position checks

Each keyword is fetched on a fixed cadence from a consistent location, language, and device profile. Consistency matters more than raw accuracy: if the sampling context never changes, a move in the chart is a move on Google.

02

Dated history per keyword

Position, ranking URL, and date, kept forever. This is what lets you separate a one-day wobble from a four-week slide, and what proves a rewrite worked.

03

Competitor columns

The domains sitting above and below you, tracked on the same keywords. Losing two positions because a competitor published something is a different problem from losing two because Google reassessed your page. See competitor rank tracking.

04

Threshold alerts

Nobody opens a dashboard daily. The software should reach you instead, the day a keyword falls out of the top 3 or off page one. Detail on rank drop alerts.

05

Reporting somebody else can read

A CMO or a client needs a dated, branded summary, not a seat in your tool. That is what ranking reports and the white-label output on the rank tracker for agencies exist for.

06

Data you can export

CSV on every plan, and a JSON endpoint on the Agency tier if you want positions in your own warehouse next to revenue. See the rank tracker API.

How to choose rank tracking software

Seven things to check before you pay for a year.

Most rank tracking software looks identical on the feature list. These are the details that decide whether the subscription gets used or quietly cancelled at renewal.

Check Why it matters Serpstracker
Update frequency by plan Several vendors advertise daily updates on the marketing page and deliver weekly on the entry tier. Read the plan, not the headline. Daily on every plan, including the $39 one
How a keyword is counted Desktop and mobile often consume two slots, and each extra city multiplies again. This is how teams blow a limit without adding queries. One keyword, one slot; device and location variants are add-ons you choose
History retention A tracker that trims history to 6 months cannot show you last year's seasonal curve. Kept for the life of the account
Alert granularity A weekly digest of every movement is noise. Per-keyword thresholds are signal. Per-keyword and per-group thresholds, email and Slack
Search engines covered Bing is roughly a quarter of US desktop search once you count Copilot and Edge defaults. Ignoring it hides real pipeline. Google and Bing on every plan
Client-facing output If the report needs your logo and no login, white-label matters more than any chart. White-label PDF and shareable link on the $249 plan
Export and API Positions are only fully useful sitting next to revenue in your own database. CSV on all plans, JSON API on the $249 plan

We put the named tools side by side on best rank tracker, including Ahrefs Rank Tracker and AccuRanker.

Standalone software vs an SEO suite

Buy the suite if you open the whole suite.

Ahrefs and Semrush include rank tracking inside a platform that also does backlinks, keyword research, and site audits. If your team genuinely uses those modules every week, that is the better purchase and we will say so plainly. Their crawlers and link indexes are things we do not build.

The problem is the common case: a team buys the platform, uses the rank tracking screen four days out of five, and pays platform money for one report. Standalone rank tracking software exists for that team. It costs a third as much, tracks more keywords per dollar, and the one screen you actually open is the one the whole product was designed around.

There is also a middle answer that a lot of agencies land on: keep the suite seat for research, and run day-to-day position monitoring somewhere cheaper so the whole keyword list fits. We wrote that out in do you need a rank tracker if you have Semrush or Ahrefs.

Rough monthly cost per tracked keyword

List prices for monthly billing, checked July 2026. Divide price by keyword allowance and the gap between categories is the real story.

  • Serpstracker Starter. $39 for 250 keywords, about 16 cents per keyword.
  • Serpstracker Agency. $249 for 5,000 keywords, about 5 cents.
  • Ahrefs Lite. $129 for 750 tracked keywords, about 17 cents, plus the rest of the platform.
  • AccuRanker. $224 for 2,000 keywords, about 11 cents, from a specialist tracker.

Cost per keyword is a sizing tool, not a verdict. A suite that replaces three subscriptions can be cheaper at a worse per-keyword rate.

Setting it up

From nothing to a tracked keyword list in an afternoon.

01

Pull the keywords you already rank for

Export the query report from Search Console for the last three months. Everything sitting between position 4 and 20 goes on the list first: those are the pages one improvement away from real traffic, and they are the ones worth watching daily.

02

Add the queries that mean money

Buyer-intent terms, competitor comparisons, and your brand. If you would rewrite a page to move it, track it. If you would not, leave it out and save the slot.

03

Set device, market, and location

Pick the market you actually sell into and stick with it. Add mobile separately only for keywords where phones drive the revenue; positions differ by two to five places more often than people expect.

04

Set thresholds and walk away

Configure alerts for the keywords that carry pipeline, and let the rest report on a schedule. A tracker you have to remember to check is a tracker you will stop checking.

Adding several hundred keywords at once is a paste job, not a data-entry job. The bulk rank checker takes the whole list in one go, and how many keywords should you track covers how to keep the list from sprawling.

Rank tracking software questions

Frequently asked questions

What is rank tracking software?

Rank tracking software is a tool that automatically checks where your website appears in search results for a set of keywords and stores the result with a date. It runs on a schedule rather than on demand, so over time you get a position history per keyword instead of a single number, plus alerts when a ranking moves.

What is the best rank tracking software?

It depends on whether you need rank tracking alone or a full SEO platform. Ahrefs and Semrush are the strongest suites if you use backlinks, research, and audits weekly. AccuRanker and Serpstracker are specialist trackers that give you far more keywords per dollar. Buy the suite only if you open more than the rank tracking screen.

How much does rank tracking software cost?

Specialist rank tracking software runs about $30 to $250 a month in 2026, priced almost entirely by keyword count. Suites that bundle rank tracking start around $117 to $129 because you are buying the whole platform. Serpstracker is $39 for 250 daily-checked keywords, $99 for 1,500, and $249 for 5,000.

How accurate is rank tracking software?

A good tracker is accurate to within a position or two of what a signed-out searcher in the same location would see. It cannot be exact, because Google personalizes results by history, device, and precise location. What matters more is consistency: the same sampling context every day means the shape of the trend is trustworthy even if a single number is not.

Is rank tracking software worth it?

It is worth it the moment you are being asked to justify SEO spend or defend a position that produces revenue. Without stored history you cannot tell a two-day fluctuation from a decline, and you find out about a drop when traffic falls weeks later. If you track fewer than ten keywords and nobody asks for reports, manual checks are fine.

Can rank tracking software track Bing as well as Google?

Good software should, and Serpstracker does on every plan. Bing feeds Copilot and is the default in Edge, so for US B2B audiences it carries a meaningful share of high-intent desktop search. Teams that only measure Google routinely underestimate where a chunk of their qualified traffic comes from.

Do I need rank tracking software if I have Google Search Console?

They answer different questions. Search Console reports clicks and an averaged position across every query, device, and location that produced an impression. Rank tracking software reports the actual position on the page for a specific keyword, every day, including keywords you do not rank for yet. Serious teams run both.

How often should rank tracking software update?

Daily for anything tied to revenue, an active campaign, or a period of algorithm volatility. Weekly is fine for stable informational keywords. Check the frequency on the exact plan you are buying rather than the marketing page, because daily updates are a common upsell to higher tiers.
