Ahrefs Rank Tracker alternative: Serpstracker vs Ahrefs, compared

The short answer

Ahrefs Rank Tracker is part of a full SEO platform that starts at $129 a month (Lite, 750 tracked keywords) and is worth every dollar if you also use Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, and Site Audit weekly. If rank tracking is the only module you open, you are paying a platform price for one screen. Serpstracker is the standalone alternative: 250 daily-checked keywords for $39, 1,500 for $99, with competitor columns, drop alerts, and reports.

Ahrefs figures are the list prices published on ahrefs.com/pricing in July 2026 for monthly billing; annual billing is cheaper. Serpstracker figures are our planned launch prices, held for early access signups. Verify both before you buy, because vendors change pricing more often than comparison pages get updated.

When you should keep Ahrefs

Do not switch if you use the platform.

If your week includes pulling referring domains for a link campaign, sizing keyword opportunity from a real index, or running a crawl before a migration, Ahrefs earns its price and no standalone tracker replaces it. Their backlink data in particular is something a rank tracker cannot substitute for at any price, because it depends on a crawler and index that took a decade to build.

Plenty of teams also run both, and that is a reasonable setup: Ahrefs for research and audits, a cheaper dedicated tracker for the daily position history everyone in the company looks at. It usually costs less than adding seats or keyword credits to the platform, and it keeps rank reporting available to people who do not have an Ahrefs login.

Switch when these are true

  • Rank Tracker is the tab you open. If the rest of the platform is unused, you are paying roughly three times the cost of the job.
  • You need more people to see rankings. Seats on a suite are expensive; a reporting link is not.
  • You want alerts, not dashboards. Per-keyword thresholds pushed to Slack beat a weekly digest nobody reads.
  • Your keyword count outgrew your plan. Buying the next platform tier for keyword headroom alone is the most common overspend in SEO tooling.
What you give up by switching

The honest trade, stated plainly.

You lose

Research depth

No keyword database, no backlink index, no crawler. If you need those, keep the suite or budget for a separate research tool. We are not going to pretend otherwise.

You lose

Brand maturity

Ahrefs has years of track record and a large support organization. Serpstracker is in early access, which means launch pricing and direct access to the people building it, and also a shorter history than the incumbent.

You gain

Cost per tracked keyword

$99 for 1,500 daily-checked keywords works out well under the platform rate for the same headroom, and the money you save is the entire argument for a standalone daily rank tracker.

We make the same case against the other suites on the Semrush position tracking comparison and against per-keyword pricing on the AccuRanker alternative page. The blog post do you need a rank tracker if you already have Semrush or Ahrefs walks through the decision without a table.

Moving your keyword list over

Export, paste, done.

Step 01

Export from Rank Tracker

Ahrefs exports your tracked keywords to CSV, including the location and device settings you configured.

Step 02

Paste the list in bulk

Drop the whole column into the bulk rank checker. Locations and devices map across without retyping anything.

Step 03

Overlap for two weeks

Run both tools side by side. Small differences are normal, since every tracker samples a slightly different context.

Step 04

Cancel when the charts agree

Once the trend lines match, you have a working history here and no reason to pay for two.

The two-week overlap matters more than people expect. Different trackers pin different locations and check at different hours, so a one or two position gap between tools is normal and not a sign either is broken. We explained the reasons in how accurate are rank trackers.

Ahrefs alternative questions

Frequently asked questions

How much does Ahrefs cost per month?

As listed in July 2026, Ahrefs costs $129 a month for Lite, $249 for Standard, and $449 for Advanced, with Enterprise quoted individually and annual billing discounted. Rank tracking limits are 750, 2,000, and 5,000 tracked keywords respectively. Check the current page before purchasing, since SEO vendors reprice regularly.

Is there a cheaper alternative to Ahrefs Rank Tracker?

Yes, if rank tracking is the part you need. Dedicated trackers run roughly $20 to $100 a month for keyword sets that would require a $129 to $249 platform plan. Serpstracker starts at $39 for 250 daily-checked keywords. What you give up is the backlink index, keyword database, and site crawler, which no standalone tracker replaces.

Does Ahrefs Rank Tracker update daily?

Ahrefs documents daily rank updates on its paid plans. Update cadence has changed over the years and can vary by plan and location, so confirm it on the plan you are actually buying. Serpstracker checks every tracked keyword once every 24 hours on all plans, including the $39 Starter tier.

Can I use Ahrefs and a separate rank tracker together?

Many teams do, and it is often cheaper than upgrading a platform tier. Keep Ahrefs for research, audits, and backlinks, and run a standalone tracker for daily positions, alerts, and the reports non-SEO colleagues read. It also keeps rank reporting available to people who do not need an expensive platform seat.

Which is more accurate, Ahrefs or a standalone rank tracker?

Neither is authoritative, because no tool can see the personalized result every individual searcher gets. What matters is consistency: a tracker that checks the same keyword from the same location and device every day produces trends you can trust. Judge accuracy by whether movements in the chart line up with movements in your Search Console clicks.

What is the best Ahrefs alternative for agencies?

For agencies the deciding factors are keyword volume, unlimited client sites, and white-label reporting rather than research depth. Our Agency plan is $249 a month for 5,000 keywords, unlimited sites, white-label PDF reports, and API access. See the agency page for how client rosters and reporting are set up.
