Website ranking checker: check your website ranking on Google, and monitor every keyword daily
The short answer
A website ranking checker tells you which position your domain holds in Google for a given search term. Enter a keyword and your domain in the tool on this page and you get the live Google top 10 with your position in it. That answers today. The harder question is whether that position is better or worse than last Tuesday, and no one off checker can answer it, because the comparison needs yesterday's number stored. That is the difference between checking a ranking and tracking one.
Serpstracker checks Google, daily by location and device. Anonymous visitors get three live checks per session with no account. Ongoing daily monitoring across a full keyword set starts at $39 a month for 250 keywords.

Websites do not have one ranking. They have a ranking per keyword.
This trips up almost everyone the first time. People search for a website ranking checker expecting a single score for the whole domain, something like a credit rating for your site. Google does not work that way and never has. Your site holds a separate position for every search term it appears for, and those positions move independently. You can be first for one phrase, twelfth for a close variant of it, and absent for a third that you assumed you owned.
So a website ranking check is really a set of checks: your domain, measured against a list of keywords, in a specific place, on a specific device. Change the location and the answer changes. Change desktop to mobile and it can change again. The tools that promise one number for your whole site are either averaging positions across a keyword list they picked for you, or they are reporting a third party authority metric that Google does not use to rank anything.
The practical version: decide which searches actually bring you customers, then check your position for those. Ten keywords you can name a buyer for beat a thousand your tool guessed at. Our guide to how many keywords you should track works through where that list should stop.
A one off check answers today. Monitoring answers what changed.
Both are useful and they are not the same purchase. A free checker is the right tool when you want to confirm a single fact right now. It becomes the wrong tool the moment the question turns into a comparison, which it always does, because every real ranking question is secretly a question about direction.
| The question | One off checker | Daily monitoring |
|---|---|---|
| Where do I rank right now? | Yes. This is exactly what it is for. | Yes, plus the same answer for every keyword at once. |
| Did I move since last week? | No. There is nothing to compare against. | Yes. Stored daily position history per keyword. |
| Which day did the drop start? | No. | Yes, to the day, which is what lets you line it up against a change you shipped. |
| Who took my place? | You can see the current top 10 and infer. | Yes. The whole top 10 is stored on every check, so you can read it back months later. |
| Am I slipping on 40 keywords at once? | Only by checking 40 times by hand, today, and again next week. | Yes, and you get told rather than having to look. |
| What do I show a client on Monday? | A screenshot that proves nothing about the trend. | A dated report with the movement in it. |
We sell the right hand column, so weigh that accordingly. The honest guidance is that if you check one keyword once a month, a free checker is genuinely all you need and you should not pay anyone. The line worth paying past is roughly the point where you are checking more than about fifteen keywords, or where somebody else is going to ask you what happened.
How to check where your website ranks on Google.
01
Write down the searches that bring buyers
Not the ones you wish you ranked for. Start from the phrases a customer would type just before they contact you. Pull the real ones from Search Console, where the queries that already send you impressions are listed whether you targeted them or not.
02
Check the position from outside your own browser
Searching in your own Chrome window gives you a personalized, location biased result that no customer sees. Use a checker that queries Google fresh, or the tool at the top of this page, so the position you record is the one being served to a stranger.
03
Set the location and device you actually sell to
A plumber in Denver and a plumber in Boston see different results for the same words. So do phone and desktop users. Pick the city and the device that match your customers, and keep them fixed, or your history compares things that were never comparable.
04
Record it, then check again tomorrow
The first number is a data point. The second is information. Whether you keep that history in a spreadsheet or in a tracker matters less than keeping it at all, because every question you will ask in three months needs the number from today.
Step two is the one people skip, and it is the one that ruins the data. Google personalizes on your history, your account and your physical location, so the position in your address bar is close to worthless as a record. We go through the mechanics in why your Google ranking is different in different locations, and if the customers you care about are in one metro, the local rank tracker checks by city and ZIP.
What is worth checking depends on how you make money.
Local service businesses
A handful of service plus city phrases, checked from the metro you serve rather than from wherever your laptop is. Position 3 in your own city is worth more than position 1 measured from nowhere in particular.
Ecommerce and retail
Category pages first, because they carry the margin, and your best selling product terms second. Watch the top 10 as much as your own row: retail results reshuffle constantly as competitors change price and stock.
SaaS and B2B
The comparison and alternative searches, where buyers are choosing a vendor. These are lower volume than the head terms and convert several times better, and they are usually where a competitor quietly overtakes you first.
Publishers and content sites
Breadth over depth. Hundreds of article terms, checked daily, because the pattern that matters is dozens of pages drifting together after an update rather than any single page moving.
Agencies and consultants
Every client, separated, on a schedule that lines up with your reporting cycle. The work is not the checking. It is producing something a client can read on the day you promised it.
In house SEO teams
A fixed core set you never change so the trend line stays honest, plus a rotating set for whatever you shipped this quarter. Changing the keyword list is how teams accidentally erase their own evidence.
Sized for the two ends of that list: rank tracking for small business and rank tracking for agencies.
The website ranking tool is only as good as what it keeps.
Most ranking checkers throw the result page away and keep your number. That seems reasonable until the day you drop four places and want to know who moved into the slot you lost. By then the evidence is gone and nobody can reconstruct it. So here is exactly what happens on every check we run, and what it lets you ask afterwards.
| Stored on every check | The question it answers later |
|---|---|
| Your position for the keyword, dated | Where were we on the Tuesday before the migration? |
| The full Google top 10 as served that day | Who was above us then, and who is above us now? |
| The change against the previous check | Did anything move overnight that I should look at? |
| Your best position ever recorded | Is this a bad week or a permanent loss? |
| The top competitor position per keyword | Are we losing to the same domain everywhere, or to different ones? |
| Whether an AI Overview was present | Is the position still worth what it was worth last year? |
The second row is the one that earns its keep. Because the whole result page is kept rather than just your row, a competitor question asked next quarter can still be answered from the day the data was taken. More on that in SERP tracking and competitor rank tracking. What we do not do is score your whole domain with a single invented visibility number, because that number would not correspond to anything Google measures.
The questions people ask about checking a website ranking.
How do I check my website ranking on Google?
Enter the search term and your domain into a ranking checker, such as the tool at the top of this page, and it returns the live Google top 10 with your position marked. Set the location and device to match your customers. Avoid searching in your own browser, because Google personalizes those results on your history and location.
How can I find my website ranking for a keyword I did not target?
Open the Performance report in Google Search Console and sort queries by impressions. Every term Google already shows you for is listed there with an average position, including ones you never planned for. Those accidental terms sitting between positions 8 and 20 are usually the fastest wins available to you.
Why is my website ranking different on my own computer?
Google personalizes results using your search history, your signed in account, your device and above all your physical location. Your own browser tends to flatter you, because it has seen you visit your own site many times. A ranking checker queries Google fresh, without that history, so the position reflects what a stranger would see.
How often should I check my website ranking?
Daily if a drop would cost you money or if a client asks about it, since daily is the only frequency that lets you date an event and line it up against a change you shipped. Weekly is enough for a slow moving site. Checking more than once a day tells you nothing extra, because ordinary daily churn hides inside it.
Is there a website ranking checker I can use without an account?
Yes. The checker on this page runs three live Google checks per session with no signup and no card. That is genuinely enough to answer a one off question about a single term. An account is only worth it once you want positions stored day after day across a list you cannot reasonably check by hand.
Does checking my ranking hurt my SEO?
No. Looking at search results has no effect on where you rank. Nothing about querying Google, whether by hand or through a tool, feeds back into your position. The one caveat is that searching for your own site repeatedly in your own browser skews what you personally see, which misleads you rather than Google.
What is a good website ranking position?
Position 1 to 3 captures the large majority of clicks, positions 4 to 10 earn a meaningful but much smaller share, and page two is close to invisible. That said, position 6 for a phrase buyers type beats position 1 for a phrase nobody searches with money in hand. Judge the position against the intent behind the query.
Can a website ranking checker tell me why I dropped?
It tells you what changed and when, which is most of the diagnosis. You get the date of the fall, the size of it, whether it hit one keyword or forty, and which domains moved up as you moved down. The why still needs a human, but a dated pattern across a keyword set narrows it to a handful of candidates fast.
