Semrush alternatives: rank tracking tools compared on price and check frequency

The short answer

Most people looking for a Semrush alternative do not need a smaller version of Semrush. They need one part of it, usually daily keyword rank tracking, without paying for keyword research, backlinks, site audits and AI visibility they open twice a year. In July 2026 Semrush starts at $117.33 a month billed annually for 500 tracked keywords. A dedicated tracker covers the same 500 keywords daily for $39 to $129. If you genuinely use the research side every week, switching costs more than it saves, and you should stay.

Every price below was read off the vendor's own pricing page in July 2026, with the currency noted where a vendor quotes something other than USD to a US visitor. Serpstracker is one of the tools listed and the section on where it is the wrong choice is as specific as the rest of the page.

The number you are comparing against

What Semrush actually costs in July 2026, and why most articles get it wrong.

Before comparing anything, get the baseline right. Semrush's own pricing pages in July 2026 list four paid tiers: SEO, Starter, Pro+ and Advanced. A large number of comparison articles published this year still quote plans called Pro, Guru and Business at different prices. If you are budgeting from a blog post rather than the vendor's page, you are likely working from a lineup that does not match what you will be charged. Check the vendor page on the day you buy, every time.

Semrush plan pricing and tracked keyword limits, read off semrush.com in July 2026
Semrush plan Billed annually Month to month Keywords tracked
SEO $117.33 a month $139 a month 500, daily
Starter (SEO plus AI search) $165.17 a month $199 a month 500, daily
Pro+ (SEO plus AI search) $248.17 a month $299 a month 1,500, daily
Advanced (SEO plus AI search) $455.67 a month $549 a month 5,000, daily

The tracking limits are the part worth staring at. The $117.33 entry plan and the $165.17 plan both cap position tracking at 500 keywords. Going from 500 to 1,500 tracked keywords means moving to Pro+ at $248.17 a month billed annually, and everything else on that plan comes with it whether you open it or not. That single step is what sends most agencies looking for something else.

The four real reasons

Why teams look for a Semrush alternative.

It is rarely that the product is bad. Semrush is a genuinely strong suite and the research data behind it is expensive to build. The reasons people leave cluster into four, and which one applies to you decides which alternative is correct.

The keyword ceiling

You need 1,500 tracked keywords and the plan that allows it costs more than double the one that allows 500. Nothing else about your usage changed. This is the most common trigger and the easiest to solve, because the thing you outgrew is the one feature a dedicated tracker sells cheaply.

Paying for a suite you use once a quarter

The audit, the backlink index, the content tools and the ad research are excellent and largely idle in a lot of accounts. If your weekly routine is checking positions and writing a client update, you are renting a research platform to read one table.

Client reporting economics

Agencies feel this hardest. One suite seat does not scale across twenty client relationships the way per-client or per-keyword pricing does, and white labeling sits on higher tiers. The math is worked through on the rank tracker cost comparison.

You only need one country and one job done properly

A lot of US businesses track a few hundred keywords in a handful of cities and want the number to be right and dated. That is a narrow job, and narrow tools do it for less.

If your reason is the first or the last, a dedicated tracker replaces Semrush cleanly. If it is the second, be honest about what "once a quarter" really means before you cancel. The head to head detail is on Serpstracker vs Semrush position tracking, and the full field is ranked on the best rank tracker roundup.

The field

Nine Semrush alternatives, what they cost and how often they check.

Check frequency is the column buyers skip and regret. A tool that updates weekly cannot tell you which day a position moved, which means it cannot connect a drop to the deploy, the core update or the competitor's new page that caused it. Two of the cheapest options here are weekly on their lower tiers.

Semrush alternatives compared by price, keyword allowance, check frequency and scope, July 2026
Tool Price, July 2026 Keywords How often it checks Scope
Serpstracker $39 / $99 / $249 a month 250 / 1,500 / 5,000 Daily, every tier Rank tracking only
SE Ranking Core $129 / Growth $279 a month 2,000 to 5,000 positions a day Daily Full suite, cheaper than Semrush
Ahrefs Lite $129 / Standard $249 / Advanced $449 a month 750 / 2,000 / 5,000 Daily on higher tiers Full suite, strongest backlink index
AccuRanker Professional $224 / Expert $764 a month 2,000 to 5,000 / 10,000 to 25,000 Daily, every tier Rank tracking only, enterprise grade
Advanced Web Ranking Pro $139 / Agency $279 a month Sold in units Daily costs 7 units per keyword Rank tracking plus reporting
Moz Pro Standard $99 / Medium $179 a month 300 to 1,900 Weekly Full suite, well known metrics
Mangools Basic $49 / Premium $69 / Agency $129 a month 200 / 700 / 1,500 Weekly except Agency Light suite, desktop and mobile use 2 slots
SERPRobot $4.99 a month per bot 75 keyword updates per 24h Daily Rank checking, minimal interface
SEO PowerSuite $349 / $599 / $899 per year Unlimited keywords On demand, you run it Desktop software, not cloud

Two currency warnings, because they will distort a budget built from screenshots. Ahrefs and SE Ranking both return euro prices to a browser sitting on a US server, so the dollar figures above are the US list prices and the euro figures you may see are not a discount or a markup, just a different storefront. The keyword allowances do not localize, so when a price looks wrong, compare the keyword counts first. Advanced Web Ranking is the other trap: its plans are sold in units, and checking a keyword daily spends seven units, so a unit allowance divides by seven before it means anything.

The comparable number

Cost per tracked keyword per month, daily checking only.

Headline prices are not comparable because every vendor sells a different allowance. Dividing the monthly price by the keywords the plan permits, and counting only plans that check daily, makes them comparable. Weekly tools are excluded here rather than flattered, because a weekly number answers a different question.

Cost per tracked keyword per month for daily cloud rank tracking, July 2026
Plan Per keyword per month At this scale
Serpstracker Agency $0.050 5,000 keywords
SE Ranking Core $0.065 2,000 keywords
Serpstracker Growth $0.066 1,500 keywords
SERPRobot $0.067 75 keywords
AccuRanker Professional $0.112 2,000 keywords
Advanced Web Ranking Pro $0.139 Unit dependent
Serpstracker Starter $0.156 250 keywords
Ahrefs Lite $0.172 750 keywords
Semrush SEO $0.235 500 keywords

Read that table with its limits in mind. SERPRobot is the cheapest way to check a genuinely small set daily, and at 75 keywords nothing here beats it on price. SE Ranking is the cheapest cloud option at 2,000 keywords and gives you a research suite for the money, which is a real argument against every dedicated tracker on this page including ours. The full working, across eleven tools, is on the rank tracker cost comparison.

The honest part

What you give up when you leave Semrush for a tracker.

A comparison page that only lists the ways the incumbent is expensive is a sales pitch. Here is the other side, and any one of these is a good reason to stay where you are.

Keyword research volumes

A dedicated tracker tells you where you rank for keywords you already chose. It does not hand you search volume, difficulty and a list of terms you had not thought of. If you build content plans monthly, that database is most of what you are paying Semrush for.

The backlink index

Crawling and storing the link graph costs a fortune and no $39 tool includes one. If you audit links, chase toxic domains or pitch link building, you need Semrush, Ahrefs or an equivalent.

Site audits

Technical crawling is a separate product. Leaving a suite means either keeping a crawler or losing the weekly technical check entirely.

One vendor, one invoice

Three specialist tools at $40 each are cheaper than one suite at $250 and are also three logins, three renewal dates and three support queues. Procurement teams have a real preference here and it is not irrational.

AI visibility tooling

The newer Semrush tiers bundle AI search visibility. If tracking how your brand appears in AI answers is now a reporting line for you, price that separately before assuming a rank tracker replaces it.

The practical answer for a lot of teams is not either or. Keep a research subscription on the cheapest tier that still gives you the database, and move the tracking, which is the part with the punishing per-keyword cost, to a dedicated tool. That combination is argued through in do you need a rank tracker with Semrush or Ahrefs.

Where Serpstracker fits

Good replacement for the tracking half, not for the suite.

Serpstracker checks Google every day, per location and per device, and stores the organic top 10 for every check so a position always has the result set behind it. Plans run $39 for 250 keywords, $99 for 1,500 across ten sites with five competitors, and $249 for 5,000 with white labeling and API access. Every tier checks daily, which is the difference that matters against the weekly tools above.

Where it replaces Semrush cleanly: you hit the 500 keyword ceiling, you track a US keyword set across cities, you report positions to clients, and the research tools were never the reason you subscribed. Where it does not: you need volumes, links or audits, in which case keep the suite and read the section above again.

Switching is less work than it looks. Export the keyword list, import it, then run both for two weeks and compare. The method, including why the two tools will disagree by a place or two and which one to believe, is in how to switch rank trackers.

Stated limits

  • Google only. Bing is not tracked.
  • Organic results. The map pack is not recorded.
  • No keyword research database, no backlink index, no site crawler.
  • No single weighted share-of-voice score. Positions and head-to-head counts instead.
  • No free plan. Three live checks per visit without an account, then $39 a month.
Semrush alternative questions

The questions people ask before they switch.

What is a cheaper alternative to Semrush?

For rank tracking specifically, several. Serpstracker is $39 a month for 250 keywords checked daily, Mangools starts at $49 but checks weekly below its Agency tier, and SERPRobot is $4.99 a month for 75 daily keyword updates. For a cheaper full suite rather than a tracker, SE Ranking Core at $129 a month is the usual answer, since it collects its own data and undercuts Semrush.

How much does Semrush cost per month?

In July 2026 Semrush lists four paid tiers on its own pricing page: SEO at $117.33 a month billed annually or $139 monthly, Starter at $165.17 or $199, Pro+ at $248.17 or $299, and Advanced at $455.67 or $549. The two cheapest plans both cap position tracking at 500 keywords, and 1,500 keywords requires the $248.17 tier.

Is there a free alternative to Semrush?

Google Search Console is free and is the closest thing, but it reports an average position blended across every location and device rather than a ranking, so it cannot tell you where you sit in one city today. Free tools that do give a live position cap you at a handful of checks. For a tracked set of any size, budget for a paid tool.

What is the best Semrush alternative for rank tracking?

It depends on scale. Under 100 keywords, SERPRobot is hard to beat on price. Between a few hundred and a few thousand checked daily, the dedicated trackers, Serpstracker and AccuRanker, are the strongest fit, with AccuRanker aimed at enterprise budgets at $224 a month. If you want a suite as well as tracking, SE Ranking is the closest like for like swap.

Is Ahrefs better than Semrush?

They are close, and the honest split is that Ahrefs has the stronger backlink index while Semrush has broader coverage of keyword, advertising and content tooling. For rank tracking alone neither is the economical choice: Ahrefs Lite is $129 a month for 750 tracked keywords, which is more per keyword than a dedicated tracker charges.

Can I use Google Search Console instead of Semrush?

Partly. Search Console gives you real impression and click data no third party can match, and it is free. What it does not give you is a position for a keyword in a specific city today, competitor positions, or same-day alerting, because its average position is aggregated over locations and devices and lags by a couple of days.

Why is Semrush so expensive?

You are paying for data collection, not software. Maintaining keyword volume databases, a crawled backlink index and a site auditor across many countries costs far more to run than checking positions for a keyword list. When only the last of those is useful to you, the price feels wrong because you are funding the other three.

Does Semrush still have Pro, Guru and Business plans?

Semrush pricing pages in July 2026 list SEO, Starter, Pro+ and Advanced rather than those names, though a large share of comparison articles published this year still quote the older lineup. Because plan structures move, check the vendor page on the day you buy and compare the tracked keyword allowance rather than the plan name.

On the Search Console question specifically, average position versus a rank tracker explains why the two numbers never match, and how much a rank tracker costs covers the pricing units across the category.
