AI Overview tracking
AI Overview tracking: what Google AI Overview rank tracking can and cannot measure
The short answer
AI Overview tracking means knowing which of your keywords now carry a generated answer block, and what it did to the clicks you used to get. It matters because an AI Overview can cut the click-through rate of the top organic result by roughly half without moving your position by a single place. Be careful what you buy here. Serpstracker checks each tracked keyword every 24 hours from a fixed US context and stores the full organic top 10, so a flat rank with falling clicks can be traced to the page above your result. It does not put a label on the AI Overview block itself. The scope table below draws that line exactly. Plans start at $39 per month.

Your position held. Your clicks did not.
This is the most common support question in SEO right now, and for a growing share of keywords the answer is a block of generated text that appeared above the first organic result. Nothing about your page changed. Nothing about your ranking changed. The page you rank on changed shape.
Rank trackers were designed for a results page made of ten links. When half the queries in a keyword set carry an answer block, a position number on its own is no longer a usable proxy for traffic. You need the position and the layout, dated, side by side, so a fall in clicks has a cause you can point at in a meeting.
That is the whole job of AI Overview tracking, and it is worth being precise about who does which half of it. Serpstracker supplies the dated position and the organic top 10 around it. It does not label the answer block itself, and the scope section below sets out exactly where that line falls.
What the 2026 data says
- 48% of tracked queries showed an AI Overview in February 2026, up 58% year over year, per BrightEdge. Health, education and research queries sit closer to 80%.
- 58% lower click-through rate for the top organic result when an AI Overview is present, from Ahrefs data collected in December 2025. The same measurement was 34.5% in April 2025.
- 2.4% click-through rate on the links inside AI Overviews as of February 2026, recovering from a low of 1.3% in December 2025, per Seer Interactive.
Read those together and the practical conclusion is simple. The AI Overview is not replacing your ranking, it is taxing it, and the size of the tax differs enormously per query. Finding out which of your keywords are paying it means comparing a dated daily position against the clicks that position earned, keyword by keyword, which is the method the scope section below walks through.
An honest scope for AI Overview rank tracking.
Three different products are sold under these words in 2026, and buying the wrong one wastes a quarter. Serpstracker is a daily organic rank tracker: it records where you sit and who sits around you. It is not a SERP feature flagger, and it is not a brand-mention platform for large language models. Plenty of pages in this category blur that line. Here is exactly where ours sits, including the rows where the answer is no.
| Signal | In Serpstracker | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Your organic position, checked daily | Yes, every 24 hours per location and device | The baseline. Everything else here is read against it. |
| The full organic top 10, stored per check | Yes, position, domain and title for all ten | Lets you answer months later who was above you on a given day. |
| Competitor positions on that SERP | Yes, for the domains you nominate | Shows whether a rival gained the slot you lost, or whether Google took it. |
| Alert the day a position drops | Yes, per keyword group. Email on every plan, Slack from Growth | Nobody checks a dashboard daily. The tracker pushes. |
| A flag saying an AI Overview appeared | Not tracked | We do not label feature blocks. If a dated AIO flag is the thing you are buying, buy a tracker that advertises it. |
| Featured snippet, local pack or shopping flags | Not tracked | Same limit. The stored top 10 shows the organic list, not the furniture around it. |
| Whether your domain is cited inside the generated answer | Not tracked | A real and separate need. Dedicated AI visibility platforms score citation share across AI Overviews and chat assistants. |
| Your brand mentions in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Perplexity | Not tracked | Different data source entirely. Do not buy a rank tracker expecting it. |
If citation share inside the generated answer is the only number you need, buy a tool built for that and skip this page. If what you actually need is to know which of your money keywords lost clicks while holding their positions, the daily record of your rank and the nine domains around it is what narrows that down, and SERP tracking is included on every plan rather than sold as an add-on tier. Rule out the rivals first, then open the live results page and look at what Google stacked above you.
Google now reports AI impressions. It still will not tell you which keyword.
On June 3, 2026 Google launched a generative AI performance report in Search Console that separates impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode out of the classic web report. It was a genuine step forward and it is worth turning on.
It is also, in its current form, impressions only. No clicks, no click-through rate, no average position, and no query-level breakdown. You can see that AI surfaces showed your page, broken down by page, country, device and date. You cannot see which keyword triggered an AI Overview, whether it was there last month, or where you ranked underneath it.
There is a second limit worth knowing before you build a process on the report. It groups every generative surface into one view: AI Overviews, AI Mode and the generative features in Discover are counted together, with no way to isolate which of the three produced a given impression. Google also confirmed this is a breakout rather than new data, since those impressions were already inside your overall totals, so your aggregate numbers did not change when the report appeared.
Google has said it will add metrics over time. Until then, the per-keyword feature history has to come from a tracker that goes and looks at the results page itself. The longer version of this argument is in Search Console average position vs a rank tracker, and the assistant side of the question, meaning ChatGPT and the other engines that do not produce positions at all, is covered in how to track ChatGPT rankings over time.
The two records, side by side
- Search Console tells you what happened to your traffic, averaged, after the fact, with AI impressions now split out but not attributed to a query.
- A SERP tracker tells you what the results page looked like on a given day for a given keyword, including whether an answer block was sitting on top of it.
- Together they answer the question a client or a CFO actually asks: clicks fell 30% on this page, so what changed on Google that week?
Four steps, and the history starts building tonight.
Step 01
Load the keywords that carry revenue
Start with the commercial queries that produce signups or sales, not the full 5,000-keyword export. Paste them in a batch with the bulk rank checker. Set the market to the United States and pick desktop or mobile per keyword group, because feature layouts differ sharply between the two.
Step 02
Let the first daily check set the baseline
The first run stores today: your position, the ranking URL and the full organic top 10 around you. That snapshot is the line every later change is measured against, so resist editing the keyword set for a week.
Step 03
Set drop alerts, then watch for the silent case
Position thresholds catch rank drops the day they happen. The other case is the quiet one: rank steady, clicks halved. Nothing will alert you to that, so pair the tracker with a monthly look at Search Console clicks per keyword and investigate any query where the two disagree.
Step 04
Triage by query type, then rewrite
Informational keywords that gained an answer block rarely recover their old click rate; the realistic play is to earn the citation or shift the effort to keywords that still send traffic. Commercial keywords lose far less, because a buyer comparing vendors still clicks through. Sort your list by that distinction before rewriting anything.
Add keywords in bulk with the bulk rank checker, set thresholds on the rank drop alerts page, and read the stored daily top 10 from the Google SERP tracker.
Anyone who has to explain a traffic chart to someone else.
Agencies
Defend the retainer with evidence
When a client's traffic slides and their rankings did not, a dated record showing the same rivals in the same order is the difference between a renewal conversation and a cancellation: it proves you did not lose the slot. Put it straight into the deck from ranking reports, or export the history as CSV and paste the numbers straight into the client deck.

Know which keywords still pay
Content budgets are being reallocated on gut feel right now. A feature column across your keyword set turns that into arithmetic: these queries still send clicks, those ones are being answered in place, plan accordingly.
Ecommerce and SaaS
Watch the money queries daily
Commercial intent queries carry AI Overviews less often and lose less when they do, but the exceptions are expensive. Track the handful of terms that produce revenue on a tight threshold, and let the long tail report weekly. Large portfolios run on the enterprise tier.
Plans start at $39 per month for 250 daily-checked keywords, $99 for 1,500 with competitor columns, and $249 for 5,000 with unlimited sites, CSV export and API access. Daily organic position history is on every plan. Serpstracker does not label SERP feature blocks or flag AI Overviews, as the scope table above sets out. Frequently asked questions
What is AI Overview tracking?
AI Overview tracking is the practice of recording, for each keyword you monitor, whether Google served an AI Overview on that results page and what your organic position was beneath it. It is a SERP feature check run on a schedule, stored as dated history. It exists because an answer block can change how many clicks a position is worth without changing the position itself.
How do I know if my keyword has an AI Overview?
For one keyword, search it in an incognito window from the market you sell in and look above the organic results. For a keyword set, that manual check does not scale and it has no memory, so use a tracker that flags the feature on every daily check and keeps the history. You can run a single live check on this page right now.
Do AI Overviews reduce clicks?
Yes, on average, though the size varies by query type. Ahrefs data from December 2025 found the top organic result loses about 58% of its click-through rate when an AI Overview is present, up from 34.5% measured in April 2025. Informational queries lose the most. Commercial and transactional queries lose considerably less, because buyers still click through to compare vendors before spending money.
What percentage of searches have an AI Overview?
BrightEdge tracked AI Overviews on 48% of monitored queries in February 2026, a 58% increase year over year. The rate is far from uniform. Health, education and research queries run closer to 80%, while many commercial and navigational queries still return a conventional results page. Your own keyword set is the only sample that matters, which is the argument for measuring it rather than reading averages.
Can Google Search Console track AI Overviews?
Partly, since June 3, 2026. Search Console now has a generative AI performance report that separates AI Overview and AI Mode impressions from the classic web report. In its current form it shows impressions only, with no clicks, click-through rate, average position or query-level breakdown, so it cannot tell you which keyword triggered an AI Overview or where you ranked under it.
Is AI Overview tracking the same as AI visibility tracking?
No, and the distinction is worth money. AI Overview tracking records whether the feature appeared on a Google results page you rank on. AI visibility tracking measures whether your brand is cited inside generated answers, including in assistants like ChatGPT and Gemini. Serpstracker does neither: it records your daily organic position and the top 10 around it, which is the baseline both of those readings get compared against. Buy a dedicated tool for whichever of the two you actually need.
How do I get cited in an AI Overview?
The observed pattern is that generated answers draw heavily on pages already ranking in the top 10 for the query, so conventional ranking work is still the entry ticket. Beyond that, structure helps: answer the exact question in the first 40 to 60 words under a heading that matches how people phrase it, keep facts current and dated, and use tables for anything comparative. None of it is guaranteed, which is exactly why you track the outcome.
Is there a free AI Overview rank tracking tool?
You can check individual keywords by hand for nothing, and the live check on this page is free to run. What no free tool gives you is dated history across hundreds of keywords, competitor columns, and an alert on the day a feature appears. Those need scheduled infrastructure, which is what the paid plans pay for. Serpstracker starts at $39 per month.
